By Mr. Ricky Kho, Mandarin Teacher

On 24 February 2024, Sekolah Monte Sienna celebrated Chinese New Year with great enthusiasm. The school was adorned with colorful decorations, marking the beginning of a joyous celebration filled with traditional performances and festivities. As preparations for the event were underway, students eagerly participated in decorating classrooms with traditional Chinese ornaments, red lanterns, and paper cutouts symbolizing good luck and prosperity. The teachers also joined in the festivities, assisting each student with the decorations, training them for the performances, and preparing performances of their own. Parents were also invited to attend and watch the celebrations.

The event commenced with an exhilarating opening by Ms. Lim Siauw Sien, the school director, who delivered a warm welcome address expressing gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate Chinese New Year together and emphasizing the importance of cultural diversity and unity.

The much-anticipated event finally began, featuring a series of extraordinary performances, starting with a lion dance. The lion dance is a significant and symbolic event in the Chinese New Year celebration, representing the arrival of good luck and the expulsion of negativity. Additionally, the audience was delighted by the adorable performances of kindergarten and primary school students. Despite the scorching sun, they executed their dances with remarkable agility and grace. Meanwhile, the secondary students showcased their musical drama performances, entertaining the audience with their humorous and meaningful dramas and dances.

Overall, the Chinese New Year celebration at Sekolah Monte Sienna School reinforced the IB philosophy of international-mindedness, which emphasizes cultural awareness. During the event, students showcased Chinese culture, traditions, values, and recognizing and appreciating the interconnectedness of the world. The celebration engages students in a cultural event that extends beyond a single culture, highlighting that Chinese New Year is celebrated not only in China but also by millions of people worldwide. This emphasizes the global significance of cultural traditions and the importance of embracing diversity, encouraging collaboration, and cultivating reflective and open-minded thinking among students. Such celebrations enable students to develop the skills, attitudes, and understanding necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and diverse world.

Throughout the event, the spirit of Chinese New Year, with its focus on family, harmony, and renewal, deeply resonated within the school community. Participants immersed themselves in the rich traditions and customs of the festival, fostering a sense of cultural appreciation and understanding. The celebration served as a reminder of the importance of cultural diversity and the school’s commitment to inclusivity, respect, and unity.
