Empowering Social and Emotional Learning
Empowering Social and Emotional Learning at Sekolah Monte Sienna
By Ms. Joy Campomayor, PYP Coordinator

To provide clear opportunities for students to develop their own skills and practices for well-being through participation in the PYP, the Grade 4 – 6 students of Sekolah Monte Sienna have participated in a session on anger management.  It was headed by the school counselor, Ms. Ardian Wahyu Nirmala, S. Psi.

Students learned to navigate anger with grace and resilience, gaining tools for understanding and managing emotions. Ms. Ardian emphasized that anger is a healthy emotion and an integral part of growing up and being human. However, it is important to acknowledge and channel this emotion constructively. The session began with an engaging and open discussion about anger, where students were encouraged to share their experiences and perspectives.

During the interactive session, Ms. Ardian introduced various coping mechanisms and strategies to help students effectively deal with anger. These techniques included deep-breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, and identifying triggers that lead to anger. The goal was to empower students to respond to anger in a way that promotes self-awareness and positive communication.

The importance of communication in managing anger was a central theme of the session. Students were taught effective communication skills to express their feelings without resorting to aggression or confrontation. Role-playing activities allowed them to practice these skills in a safe and controlled environment, enhancing their ability to articulate their emotions calmly and assertively. Ms. Ardian shared the following tips in order to “tame your inner volcano” that definitely made it easier for the students to follow.

  • First, Feel It! – recognize the emotion, avoid lashing out
  • Keep an anger log
  • Cool down countdown
  • Think before you boom!
  • Take a break – connect with nature, explore music, create art

Moreover, the session highlighted the significance of empathy in resolving conflicts and managing anger. Students were encouraged to consider other people’s perspectives and emotions, leading to a sense of understanding and compassion. Ms. Ardian emphasized that developing empathy not only contributes to personal growth but also plays a crucial role in building a harmonious and supportive community.

As part of the holistic approach to well-being, the school has integrated ongoing support for students in the form of scheduled check-ins and follow-up sessions with the school counselor. This ensures that the skills and strategies learned in the anger management session are reinforced and continually developed over time.

Parents were involved in the process as well through a follow-up parenting session that took place on a Saturday morning of the same week. With the theme “Understanding Your Child’s Development and Managing Their Mood Swings”, parents were given a platform to express their feelings, challenges and acknowledge that raising a child can feel like riding a rollercoaster: exhilarating one moment, terrifying the next. But just like mastering a rollercoaster, with understanding and the right tools, parents can navigate the ups and downs of adolescence and foster a happy, healthy relationship with their child. The resources and the fruitful open forum provided them support for their children’s emotional well-being that they can apply at home. This collaborative effort between the school, students, and parents aims to create a support system that addresses the multifaceted aspects of a child’s development.
