Middle Years Programme

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for learners aged 11-16 fosters
and develops adolescents as balanced, communicators, and
open-minded in a complex and rapidly changing world.

MYP Assessment plays an integral role in the teaching and learning process. All forms of assessments (formative or summative) are aligned with the subject-group objectives as required by the IB MYP. Each criterion evaluates and represents the use of knowledge, understanding and skills such as analyzing, organizing, designing, applying and reflecting. They encompass the factual, conceptual, procedural and metacognitive dimensions of knowledge.

To help students acquire the highest level, teachers develop scrupulous tasks aside from written-based exams according to the needs of the subject and the nature of the knowledge, skills and understanding being assessed. The product of tasks made by the students are carefully evaluated and given feedback and are presented in a ‘Celebration of Learning’ to culminate students’ learning journey.

With its compatibility assurance among other educational curricula, the flexibility of MYP Curriculum Framework allows schools to meet national, state, provincial or other subject specific curricular requirements while fulfilling the IB mission and implementing IB philosophy.

The main key features of the MYP are the emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and learning (context and concept driven curriculum), outcomes of the programme (inquiry-based service & action and projects), and broad & balanced curriculum (disciplinary and interdisciplinary subjects).

IB Learners and IB Profile

The IB learner profile brings to life the aspirations of a community of IB World Schools dedicated to student-centered education.

Learning and Teaching

Approach where different views and perspectives are valued: asking (inquiry), doing (action) and thinking (reflection),

Broad & Balanced Curriculum

Offer students access to various academic subjects, and conceptual learning that focuses on powerful organizing ideas that have relevance within and across subject groups.

Support dynamic learning across a range of language domains that is fundamental to the development of intercultural understanding

In an ever-changing world, critical thinkers must successfully integrate disciplinary perspectives to understand real-world issues, ideas and challenges, and to take action to promote positive changes in societies. This is one of the key features of the MYP as emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and learning.

Education for a highly interconnected world, students have to see the connection between knowledge from various disciplines to understand the world. At Sekolah Monte Sienna, MYP’s interdisciplinary teaching and learning is grounded in individual subject groups and disciplines but extends disciplinary understanding in ways that are integrative and purposeful. It is geared towards bringing together concepts, methods or modes of communication from two or more established areas of expertise to develop new perspectives.

The implementation of the MYP programme offers students the opportunity to engage in both the Community Project and the Personal Project which are known as MYP PROJECTS. These projects are student centered, age-appropriate, and according to students’ individual needs to engage in practical explorations through a cycle of inquiry, action and reflection. It helps students develop the attributes of the IB learner profile; provide students with an essential opportunity to demonstrate ATL skills developed through the MYP; and foster the development of independent, lifelong learners.

At Sekolah Monte Sienna, our students are given the opportunity to explore their potentials based on their interest through inquiry considering relevant local and global issues or trends. Equipped with IB Attributes and ATL Skills over the course of years shaped under the IB educational philosophy, students take meaningful actions and reflection through creative products demonstrating a consolidation of their learning in the MYP.

The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community. In the IB continuum, this continues with the service component of the DP’s creativity, activity, service (CAS) requirements, in which students continue to increase their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth, undertake new challenges, plan and initiate activities, work collaboratively with others, show perseverance and commitment, engage with locally and globally significant challenges and consider the ethical implications of their actions. (MYP From Principles into Practice, 2022).

At Sekolah Monte Sienna, learning becomes purposeful once students respond to more relevant global or local issues. Students often build authentic connections between what they are learning in the classroom and how they will extend service and action as contribution in the community. In a nutshell, our students acquire knowledge and skills by the community involvement as a partner in the learning environment.
